Sunday Keys for MainStage 2021: Controlling Sunday Keys From Your Phone/Tab

You can control Sunday Keys from your smartphone or tablet via the $5 app TouchOSC that turns your smart device into a wireless midi controller.

In this video you'll learn how to control Sunday Keys from your smartphone or tablet via the $5 app TouchOSC that turns your smart device into a wireless midi controller.

First, search for and purchase TouchOSC in the App Store or Google Play store on your smart device.
Next, you need to click on these two links over on the Sunday Keys Resource Page under "Video 8. Controlling Sunday Keys From Your Phone/Tablet (TouchOSC Set-up)" - “Download TouchOSC Editor” and “Download TouchOSC Bridge”. Then head over to your Downloads Folder in a Finder window and double click both zip files to unzip them. First click and drag the TouchOSC Bridge file to the MainStage folder in your favorites bar.
Then, click the editor folder and do the same, with the TouchOSC editor file inside it. Don’t worry about the other folder here named “Layouts”.
After moving the two files, they should appear within your MainStage folder. You can delete the zip files from your downloads folder now if you’d like.
Within the MainStage folder, double click TouchOSC Bridge. You’ll likely see a warning that says “This Application was downloaded from the internet” and asking you if you’d like to proceed. Click “Open”. TouchOSC Bridge has to be running in order for your computer to connect to the app on your phone. When it opens the only way you’ll know is from this little “B” icon up in the toolbar. Make sure any time you want to connect TouchOSC to Sunday Keys, that you open TouchOCS Bridge on your computer first.
Now, still in the MainStage folder double click on TouchOSC editor. You may see another warning, go ahead and click “Open” again. It may take a second for the Editor to open. When it does, click the icon in the menu titled “open” and in the popup window select the MainStage folder from your favorites bar, then choose Sunday Keys, then the folder “TouchOSC and Alt Layouts”, then lastly, TouchOSC Files. Sunday Keys comes with two TouchOSC layouts- one optimized for smart phone displays and one designed for larger, tablet or iPad displays. Select the option you’d prefer, then click “Open”. Now you can see the Layout on screen in the Editor.  
Next, click the green arrow titled “Sync” in the menu bar.
Now, make sure that your computer and your smart device are both connected to the same WiFi network. Pick up your smart device and open the TouchOSC app. I’ll show you the phone display onscreen now so you can see the next steps. Make sure you aren't connecting with WiFi and USB or you may have issues.
When you first open TouchOSC it may open to a visual with faders, buttons, knobs, etc. Click the small circle in the corner of the display if it does, to get to the menu. Once you’re inside the menu, touch the second option under “Connections” which is titled “TouchOSC Bridge” then touch the toggle to turn it on. If your computer and phone are on the same Wifi network you should see an IP address under “Network Host” after enabling TouchOSC Bridge. If you have trouble connecting over WiFi, touch the Network host option and manually input your computer’s IP address. You can google the phrase “how to find my IP address” if you need help doing so.
Now, go back out to the main menu and touch the white bar under “Layout” then touch the first option “Add”. If you remembered to open TouchOSC Bridge and your computer and phone are both on the same Wifi network you’ll see the name of your computer under “Found Hosts”. Touch the name to Sync the layout to your smart device. Then scroll down on the list to find the name of the layout, either SK Phone or SK iPad. then touch that option In the list to select it.
Back out to the main menu and press “done” in the top right corner. From here you can open up or head back to your Sunday keys concert.

The default Sunday keys concert has some aspects of the workspace assigned to the Korg nanoKontrol2 like the four main sections In the top half of the template, the previous and next buttons, tap tempo, and panic.

All the other onscreen controls including the Tonic Pad Player, the Extra section and the Output section volume controls are assigned to be controlled by TouchOSC. You can test out that you have a successful connection by pressing the “On” button for Tonic on your smart device.   If you don’t see evidence of the connection, go. back and watch the instructions again up until this point. in the video to make sure you didn’t miss a step. If you’re still having trouble, you can find lots of helpful suggestions in the TouchOSC user manual, which is available online.

How TouchOSC is Laid Out

Now that TouchOSC is connected to Sunday Keys, you can cycle through the four tabs at the top of the screen if you’re using the phone sized layout to view all the controls. The first page controls Tonic, the second page contains the Extra and Output sections but remember that by default the nanoKontrol2 will control tap tempo, the patch change buttons, and the panic button, not TouchOSC. The third and fourth tabs are for control over the four main sections in Sunday Keys.

 If you’d like to use them, you’ll need to load an alternate layout file into your Sunday Keys concert.  

Controlling your Patches with TouchOSC
To set up your new concert to control your patches with TouchOSC (instead of the nanoKontrol2) follow these steps:

Duplicate your concert by clicking “File” from the toolbar and choosing “Save As” from the menu. Rename your concert to something you’ll remember like “Sunday Keys- TouchOSC”. Then hit save. It may take longer than normal to save your concert as all the files are copied over.
After saving, click the “Layout Mode” button at the top left corner of MainStage.
Once you’re in Layout mode, click the settings cog in the top right corner of the display and choose “Import Layout”. Then select your MainStage folder from the favorites bar in the window that pops up, then click your ‘sunday keys 2’ folder and choose ‘touchosc and alt layouts’, then lastly click ‘alternate layouts’. Now, select the “Sk- All TouchOSC.layout” file and click “Import. then click “Continue Import” in the pop-up.
Now, you can click the “Edit Mode” button in the top left corner of MainStage, then click a patch in your patch list. If you imported the layout correctly, you’ll see the faders and knobs in the third tab of TouchOSC and the buttons in the fourth tab mirror the onscreen settings within Sunday Keys. When you change patches all the settings in TouchOSC will change to reflect the new patch as well.
Go ahead and save your concert file by hitting ⌘S on your keyboard or choosing file from the toolbar and selecting “Save” from the menu.

After doing this, you can use this concert as the basis for all your preparation in the future so you don’t have to repeat this set up process, or you can go back to the original concert file in your Sunday Keys folder at any time if you’d like to return to the default nanoKontrol2 assigned settings.
